Voice, Listening & Improvisation
3-hour workshop with Gugulethu Duma

This immersive vocal workshop approaches the voice as more than an instrument: it is memory, rhythm, relation, and embodied knowledge. Led by South African performer, composer, and voice practitioner Gugulethu Duma, the session draws from jazz improvisation, Xhosa vocal traditions, chant-making, somatic listening practices, and experimental approaches to sound.
Rooted in Duma’s methodology Ancestral Body Noise, participants are invited into a shared space of listening, resonance, and vocal exploration. Through breath work, vocal activation, improvisation exercises, rhythm, and collective sounding, the workshop investigates how voice carries personal and cultural histories, while also opening new possibilities for expression and connection.
The session will explore vocal foundations such as tone, breath, release, phrasing, and range, alongside practices of call-and-response singing, intuitive composition, and ensemble listening. Attention is given not only to how we produce sound, but to how sound moves through the body, between bodies, and within space.
Open to singers, musicians, performers, and complete beginners alike, this workshop does not require formal vocal training. Instead, it asks for curiosity, presence, and a willingness to listen differently. Participants will leave with practical vo
