Drum Mastery: Techniques, Improvisation, and Musical Insight

Our drum course focuses on a comprehensive range of skills, including playing techniques, stylistic nuances, sound mastery, improvisation, sight-reading, and interpretation.

We aim to expand students’ musical awareness and creativity, encouraging them to envision and implement various approaches—whether targeted, free, accompanying, soloing, or improvisational.

The curriculum caters to all levels, from beginners to advanced players, with instruction available through both individual lessons and small group settings. Students receive tailored guidance to build technical proficiency, coordination, and theoretical understanding. Emphasis is placed on exploring diverse styles and musical cultures to enrich the overall learning experience.

    Ernst Bier

    Renowned Jazz Drummer

    Ernst Bier is a distinguished drummer trained by jazz legends including Billy Brooks, Charlie Persip, Vernell Fournier, and Elvin Jones. He honed his skills in New York City’s vibrant jazz scene from 1982 to 1987, before establishing himself in Cologne and later Berlin in 1992.

    Versatility and Collaborations

    Known for his sensitive yet dynamic playing, Ernst Bier is highly regarded for his musicality and wit, as praised by the Bonner Rundschau. During his New York years, he built lasting connections with prominent musicians like Perry Robinson, Mack Goldsbury, Ed Schuller, and Herb Robertson.

    Notable Performances and Recordings

    Ernst has led rhythm sections in notable groups such as the Perry Robinson Quartet and the Christoph Adams Trio. He has also performed alongside jazz legends including Attila Zoller, Chet Baker, and Lester Bowie. With nine acclaimed albums as a bandleader and 36 recordings as a sideman.

    At the Global Music Academy, Ernst offers drum lessons for students of all ages and music levels.

    Prof. Dietrich Woehrlin

    Experienced Drums and Passion for Teaching 

    Dietrich is a seasoned drums teacher with extensive experience in the music industry. His passion for music is matched by his dedication to teaching. He is committed to creating an engaging and effective learning environment, constantly innovating his teaching methods. He says, “I am as passionate about teaching as I am about music. I’m particularly interested in developing, refining, and testing teaching materials and methods.”

    Career and Contributions

    Dietrich’s impressive career includes a notable tenure as a lecturer at the Berlin Academy of Music “Hanns Eisler” from 1998 to 2007. He has also been a prominent figure at the “Academy of Music and Theatre” in Rostock since 1999, where he leads seminars and courses on stylistics, methodology, teaching practice, ensembles, and rhythm & body percussion. His contributions to education were recognized in 2019 with an honorary professorship from the Rostock University of Music and Drama.

    Global Impact

    Dietrich has developed teaching materials and programs for music schools in Eastern and Southern Africa.

     At the Global Music Academy, he instructs students in drums, percussion, body percussion, and rhythmic sight-reading.
