Greek Folk Music Mastery: Bouzouki, Tsouras, Baglamas, and Guitar

Our Greek folk music lessons explore the rich tradition of the Rebetiko orchestra, which includes instruments such as the bouzouki, baglamas, folk guitar, and tzouras.

Students will delve into Greek urban music from the early 20th century to the present day. Instruction covers a range of folk and Rebetiko instruments, including the folk guitar, three-string bouzouki, four-string bouzouki, baglama, and tzouras. The curriculum includes the theory and harmony of Greek folk music, focusing on scales, makams, rhythm, accompaniment, improvisation, and instrumental techniques.

The lessons also feature seminars conducted by accomplished virtuoso musicians and provide access to audio samples from the Smyrniote and post-war singing schools. This includes works by prominent composers from Smyrna, Constantinople, Athens, and Piraeus, enriching your understanding of this vibrant musical tradition.

    Esteemed Multi-Instrumentalist and Educator

    Dinos Bouzanis began his musical journey at the Municipal Conservatory of Ioannina under the guidance of acclaimed musicians such as Giannis Stamatiou, Domenic Vamvacaris, and Christos Zotos.

    Contributions to Music Education

    Dinos has made significant contributions to music education by founding the first school of folk instruments at the Conservatories of Epirus and serving as a bouzouki teacher at the Tsakalov Conservatory. Since 1994, he has led the folk departments at the Municipal Conservatory of Ioannina and Philippos Nakas Conservatory and has lectured at the Technological Education Institute of Epirus.

    Promotion of Traditional Greek Music

    Over a 25-year period, Dinos has curated music ensembles for numerous events and festivals, promoting Epirus’s cultural heritage. He has been a music associate with the Traditional Dancing Club of Kallarites since 1990, participating in international festivals in Warsaw and Corsica. His dedication to Greek musical traditions have earned him recognition, including accolades at the Music Schools of the Mediterranean meeting in Damascus, Syria.
