Nyunga Nyunga Mbira: Exploring Southern African Rhythms

In the group course “Nyunga Nyunga Mbira,” we delve into the rich and diverse musical traditions of Southern Africa, focusing on Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and South Africa.

Students will explore traditional songs as performed by Mbira masters, along with popular Southern African tunes adapted for the Nyunga Nyunga Mbira.

Our teaching approach combines traditional methods with contemporary techniques. In a fun and relaxed group setting, students will learn new songs, understand the interplay of different mbiras within the ensemble, and develop essential fingering techniques. The course also emphasizes improvisation and encourages students to create their own variations, fostering both individual creativity and ensemble cohesion.
