Sitar Mastery: Embrace the Art of Indian Classical Music

In sitar lessons, students embark on a journey through the rich tradition of Indian classical music, mastering essential techniques and concepts. From the outset, you’ll learn the fundamental skills of handling the sitar, including proper plucking techniques and finger positioning for both the melody and sympathetic strings.

As you progress, you’ll explore the intricate world of raga theory, understanding musical scales and modes integral to Indian classical music, and learning to play and improvise within various ragas.

The course also delves into the tala system, where you’ll gain an understanding of rhythmic cycles and practice playing in diverse rhythmic patterns. Fundamental exercises, known as alankars, will help develop finger agility and coordination, while you’ll also learn traditional compositions (gat or bandish) and perform them in different ragas and talas. Emphasis is placed on improvisation within the framework of a raga and tala, allowing you to express yourself creatively while respecting traditional guidelines.

To enhance your learning experience, you’ll also focus on listening skills, analyzing performances by master sitarists to grasp stylistic nuances and interpretative techniques. Practical aspects such as basic sitar maintenance, including tuning and cleaning, will also be covered. Lessons are customized to suit your level of experience and personal interests, whether you are a beginner or an advanced player, ensuring a comprehensive and fulfilling exploration of the sitar.

    Heider Kamal

    Expert in Harmonium, Sitar, and Afghan Classical Music

    Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1949, Heider Kamal discovered his passion for music during his school years. Under the guidance of Ustad Rahimgul in Kabul, he developed a strong foundation in Afghan classical music. He furthered his studies in sitar and singing at the renowned Bhatkandy Music College in India, where he honed his skills and deepened his musical knowledge.

    Professional Musical Journey

    Heider Kamal’s musical journey has seen him perform in numerous concerts and collaborate with esteemed musicians. His notable collaborations include working with Grandmaster Kamalesh Maitra’s Ragatala Ensemble, where he blended Indian and Western instruments to create unique musical experiences. 

    At the Global Music School, Heider Kamal offers lessons in harmonium, sitar, Afghan classical singing, and folk music. His teaching approach is rooted in his extensive experience and deep understanding of music, allowing students to explore and master these traditional instruments and styles. He is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich musical heritage of Afghanistan while inspiring a new generation of musicians.
