
Kathak is the classical dance form of Northern India, rooted in storytelling, rhythm, and graceful movement. With its origins in both temple and court traditions, Kathak blends intricate footwork, rapid spins, expressive gestures, and rhythmic play into a richly layered art form.
We’re offering two Kathak workshops. You can attend either one or both:

More Details About Kathak – Rhythm & Movement Workshop!
This workshop focuses on Tatkar (foot percussion) and Hastak (basic hand and arm movements), exploring their use in dance and the dynamic connection between movement and rhythmic cycles (Tala). You’ll learn how Kathak dancers use syllables (Bols), precise footwork, and posture to embody rhythm—building coordination, stamina, and musicality. Perfect for those new to Indian dance, as well as percussion lovers curious about rhythm in motion.
Workshop Schedule
- Welcome & Introduction (15 mins)
Get to know the group, receive a short intro into Kathak’s rhythmic system, and learn how to tie and wear Ghungroo (ankle bells), which we’ll use during the workshop. - Tatkar: Footwork Basics (30 mins)
Learn the foundational steps and how to keep rhythm using syllables and bells (Ghungroo). - Chakkars & Movement Phrases (30 mins)
Practice simple movement sequences and turns, exploring grace and timing. - Rhythm Cycles & Composition (30 mins)
Work with a basic Tala, understand its structure, and try your first dance composition within a rhythmic framework. - Wrap-Up (15 mins)
Time for reflection, feedback, and questions.

This workshop introduces the expressive elements of the dance: Abhinaya (expression), Hastas (hand gestures), and the art of conveying emotion and narrative through subtle movement.
Together, we’ll explore short scenes, poetic interpretation, and how to communicate through gaze and gesture. This workshop is ideal for dancers, actors, and anyone curious about non-verbal storytelling in Indian Dance.

Meet the group and learn about the roots of Abhinaya in Indian dance. - Mudras & Meaning (30 mins)
Learn classical hand gestures (Hastas) and how they are used to build images and ideas. - Abhinaya & Storytelling in Motion (60 mins)
Explore facial expression, gaze, and subtle body language through guided improvisation.
Then bring it all together in a short expressive sequence inspired by poetry - Wrap-Up & Q&A (15 mins)
Reflection, questions, and sharing impressions from the expressive process.
