This two and a half-hour session offers a hands-on and reflective introduction to musical improvisation. But it’s not just about how to improvise on your instrument — it’s about how to react, correspond, and stay present with both musical and non-musical elements.

You’ll explore the role of awareness, rhythm, tension, timing, and spontaneous decision-making through guided exercises and group interaction.

Workshop participants will learn the basic syllables and rhythms of the Kecak, and practise the rebana rhythms using drums, handclaps and body percussion. There will also be some frame drums available but please bring your own drum with you to the workshop if you have one.

The first workshop will be an introduction to the Gamelan for participants with no prior experience of playing the instruments, while the second is designed for intermediate participants who have some basic knowledge of Gamelan.
