Xin Wei Thow
Master of Javanese Gamelan
Xin Wei’s passion for Javanese Gamelan began in 2007 with the Singa Nglaras Gamelan Ensemble at the National University of Singapore. Since then, he has immersed himself in its complexities, frequently traveling to Surakarta, Central Java, for intensive studies. Awarded the Darmasiswa RI scholarship in 2010 and 2018, Xin Wei dedicated several years to perfecting his craft at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Surakarta, and collaborating with local ensembles.
Expertise and Scholarly Pursuits
His expertise includes advanced instruments such as the Rebab, Kendhang, and Gender, which he has mastered through private instruction with esteemed musicians. His Master’s Thesis, focusing on traditional music standards, highlights his commitment to scholarly research.
Leadership and Global Performances
As Music Director of Singa Nglaras since 2012, Xin Wei has orchestrated rehearsals, curated repertoire, and built partnerships with venues and Indonesian artists. Notable recent performances include appearances at Singapore’s Esplanade Theatres on the Bay, SIPA (Solo International Performing Arts), Rumah Budaya Indonesia in Berlin, and the Institut für Ethnomusikologie der KUG in Graz.
At the Global Music Academy, Xin Wei offers lessons in Javanese Gamelan for students ranging from beginners to advanced learners.
